Special Education Schools Teachers- Why Are They Underpaid?

People have always known that public school teachers get low yearly salaries but did you know that those who teach at special education schools are making less money yearly, a lot less actually, than public school teachers.

On average special education teachers working at special education schools are making 40% less money yearly than those who work in public schools. The average income for those teaching in a public school is between $31,000 to $52,000 which is low but that means special education teachers are making $18,600 to $31,200. The highest on average a special education teacher is getting paid is the lowest a public school teacher is getting paid! If that is not enough the turnover rate is twice as much for special education teachers as it is to public school teachers.

This problem is not going unnoticed though. The MAAPS, or the Massachusetts Association of 766 Approved Private Schools, has noticed this problem and is trying to fight back for private school teachers. The MAAPS is trying to push legislation that will increase the salaries of teachers and aides to the salaries of public school teachers. They are also pushing to get more money into private schools who at this time are having trouble just getting textbooks into their doors.

One such school, the Longview Farm, which is a private school which takes special-needs students if a public school does not have the resources to educate the student with severe learning problems, is having the problems that MAAPS is trying to fix.

MAAPS is currently representing 6,000 children between the ages of 3 and 22 over a total of 155 day and residential schools in the state of Massachusetts. Not only do they have those 6,000 students but they also represent 1,000 students who come from either out of the state or out of the country!

The disabilities that are found at these special education schools are autism, blindness, deafness, emotional and behavioral difficulties, and mental retardation.

The problem is that the state sets a minimum reimbursement rate for teachers, teaching ratios, and tuitions, which are all paid by the state. Schools have the option to pay teacher more but they usually do not have the money to do it. Tuition to go to a day school costs about $39,000 and tuition for residential schools cost about $125,000. With such high rates it is no wonder that special education schools do not have that much extra money in the end.

Special education schools are an expensive thing which ultimately effects the salary of the teachers but if MAAPS gets their legislation through the problem should be fixed.
